Between Halloween and First Chair: How Steamboat Spends Its Quietest Weeks

Steamboat Springs has one more busy weekend before it goes quiet. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and Opening Day at Steamboat Resort is Saturday, Nov. 21. The three weeks in between look empty on a weekend calendar. Look at Monday through Thursday instead and they fill in. The library programs, the strongest dinner deals and even the first restaurant reopening all fall on weeknights.

Halloween Weekend Is the Last Busy One

This weekend, Oct. 30 and 31, is the one stretch of the offseason that feels like peak season.

On Friday, Oct. 30, Strings Music Festival is screening Hocus Pocus at 7 p.m., followed by a live conversation with cast members. Tickets start at $46. It's an easy pick for families and a fun one for anyone who grew up with the movie. It's also the only date on the Strings calendar through the November days shown, so the pavilion won't have another event for a while.

Saturday, Oct. 31, starts early. The Foundry Halloween Run is a family-friendly 5K at Soda Creek Elementary from 9 a.m. to noon, with separate adult and youth tickets. That evening, the annual Downtown Halloween Stroll closes Lincoln Avenue from 5 to 7 p.m. for costumes, street performers, a children's costume contest and candy. Main Street Steamboat describes the stroll as a yearly Oct. 31 tradition, which puts it on a Saturday night in 2026.

After that weekend, the calendar changes shape.

In November, the Calendar Moves to Weeknights

The most reliable source of November evening plans is the Bud Werner Memorial Library. Every major program it has posted for the month falls on a weekday.

Date Event Time and place
Tuesday, Nov. 10 Reel Rock Film Festival 2026, four world-premiere climbing films 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Library Hall
Wednesday, Nov. 11 Author Betsy Gaines Quammen 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Library Hall
Thursday, Nov. 12 Genealogy Club Writers Group 10:30 a.m. to noon, Conference Room, Administration Wing
Wednesday, Nov. 18 "Weather: Forecasting & Nowcasting" with Mike Weissbluth 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Library Hall

The week of Nov. 9 has three library programs on three straight days. Reel Rock is the biggest draw, and with four world premieres it's the kind of night that brings out people who climb, people who ski and people who simply like a big screen. The weather talk on Nov. 18 is three days before Opening Day, the week when many people in town start checking forecasts every morning.

If you prefer mornings, Old Town Hot Springs makes a good weekday habit. Its hours page from late September 2026 lists the gym and pools open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The waterslides are closed for the season. On a weekday you can swim an hour earlier than on Saturday or Sunday, which is easy to miss if you only check the weekend schedule. Check Old Town Hot Springs before you go, since fall hours can change.

The Dinner Deals Run on the Same Days

Restaurant specials follow the same pattern. The best mud season discounts in town are built around Sunday through Thursday, and some drop off on weekends.

  • Aurum Steamboat opens daily at 4:30 p.m. and offers a free Gold Club membership that takes 50% off entrées Sunday through Thursday. Happy hour runs daily from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Details are on Aurum's site.
  • E3 Chophouse is listed on Main Street Steamboat's happy-hour index with Mud Season Specials. Monday is all-you-can-eat snow crab, Tuesday through Friday brings half-price entrées, and Saturday and Sunday feature prime rib.
  • Bésame is listed with a daily happy hour from 4 to 5:30 p.m. that includes 30% off tapas, 50% off house cocktails, $10 house margaritas, 25% off wine by the glass and $5 draft beer.

E3's lineup shows the pattern clearly. The half-price entrée discount covers four weeknights, and the weekend brings a featured dish in its place. Aurum's Gold Club follows the same calendar, with the discount ending on Friday and Saturday.

One caveat applies to the index. Main Street Steamboat's happy-hour page notes that restaurants sometimes change their happy hours with the season and asks diners to check each restaurant's own website for current details. Before you build a Monday around snow crab, confirm with the restaurant.

Some Doors Close for a Few Weeks

Some kitchens take the quiet weeks off entirely. Café Diva has been closed for the season since Oct. 25 and plans to reopen Nov. 18. Other restaurants are in transition without set dates. The Periodic Table says its La Costa summer season is ending and a winter 2026 menu concept is coming, but it hasn't posted closing or reopening dates. The Boat Yard's site says it is closed for the 2026 summer season and lists no reopening date.

Before you book a November dinner, call ahead or check the restaurant's own site, since the status can change from week to week this time of year.

The Week of Nov. 16 Is When the Town Starts Back Up

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, Café Diva plans to reopen for the winter, and Mike Weissbluth is at the library that evening talking about forecasting. Three days later, on Saturday, Nov. 21, the lifts start turning.

That makes the week of Nov. 16 a good time for one last quiet dinner reservation, before visitors arrive for the season. Café Diva's site lists a daily happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, plus Date Night Sundays, and takes reservations at (970) 871-0508.

Opening Day, Saturday, Nov. 21

Steamboat Resort has confirmed Opening Day for Saturday, Nov. 21, 2026, at the base at 2305 Mt. Werner Circle. Festivities begin at 7:30 a.m. and lifts open at 8:30 a.m. The resort's Opening Day page lists:

  1. A limited-edition Ohana T-shirt and Smartwool socks for the first 100 people on the mountain.
  2. Free Powder Day donuts, coffee and mimosas while supplies last.
  3. A Champagne Powder Snow Bell countdown.
  4. Prize stashes on the mountain, with clues posted on @SteamboatResort.

The resort says the full schedule is still to come, so check that page again the week of the 16th.

According to the resort's hours and operations page, Christie Peak Express, the Steamboat Gondola and Wild Blue Gondola are all set to open Nov. 21, along with scenic gondola rides. Skeeter's Ice Rink has a weather-dependent opening date, so the skating season may start on a different day than the ski season.

The 7:30 a.m. start and the 100-person giveaway reward an early arrival, and that timing works best for anyone who lives close enough to the base to beat the crowd.

The offseason is also the slowest stretch of the year for most of us here, which makes it a good time to step back and look at your own place while you have room to think. If you're curious what your home is worth heading into the winter season, Michelle Parilla and the team will put together a personalized value report with the same local attention we bring to every client.
